PEMF Therapy in La Jolla, San Diego

PEMF is one of those services people hear about from a training partner, a physical therapist or a podcast, then struggle to get a straight explanation of. Here is ours.

What PEMF Therapy Is

Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy applies low-frequency electromagnetic pulses to the body, usually through a mat you lie on or an applicator placed over a specific area. You feel very little. Some people notice a faint tapping or a light buzzing sensation, and many feel nothing at all. There are no needles, no heat, and no recovery time afterwards.

The idea behind it is that pulsed fields influence activity at the cell membrane. That mechanism is the basis for the FDA-cleared medical uses of PEMF devices, which include bone growth stimulation after certain fractures and spinal fusions and specific pain and edema indications, all with prescription devices used under medical direction.

Being Clear About Evidence

The strongest evidence for PEMF sits with those cleared medical uses and their prescription devices. The wellness use most people are asking about, lying on a mat for general recovery, sleep, and soreness, rests on a much smaller and more mixed body of research.

We offer PEMF at SDBody as a recovery and comfort service. We do not present it as a treatment for a diagnosed condition. Patients tell us it helps them wind down, and some report less stiffness after hard training. Those are real experiences, and they are worth something. They are not the same as proof, and we are not going to blur the two.

If you want to know why your recovery is poor in the first place, the answer is more likely to be in your bloodwork than on a mat. Start with our diagnostic labs.

Who Uses PEMF at Our La Jolla Clinic?

  • Athletes and gym regulars managing soreness through a training block
  • Patients working through general stiffness and slow recovery
  • People who want a low-effort, passive recovery session that requires nothing of them
  • Patients already in our hormone care or medical weight loss programs who are building a broader recovery routine
  • Anyone recovering from a procedure who wants supportive care, alongside our recovery after surgery services

What A Session Looks Like Here

You stay fully clothed. Our team confirms your health history, sets the program, and positions the mat or applicator, then you lie down for the session. There is no preparation beforehand and no downtime afterwards, so most people book it around work or straight after a training session. If you are combining it with sauna, plunge, or red light on the same visit, tell the front desk when you book so the order makes sense and the timing works.

Safety and Who Should Check With Us First

PEMF is generally well tolerated, and most people notice nothing beyond feeling relaxed. Screening still matters.

Tell us before booking if you have a pacemaker, implanted defibrillator, cochlear implant, insulin pump, neurostimulator, or any other implanted electronic device. Electromagnetic fields can interfere with them. Also let us know if you are pregnant, have a seizure disorder, have an active bleeding condition, or have metal implants near the treatment area. Our clinical team reviews your history at intake and will tell you plainly if PEMF is not appropriate for you.

Why SDBody La Jolla?

Most PEMF in San Diego is offered by recovery studios and chiropractic offices with no diagnostic capability and no physician on site. That is the gap we fill.

  • Physician-led practice. Co-founded by Dr. Shawn Vedamani, MD, Medical Director, and a board-certified anesthesiologist with more than 15 years of clinical experience, and Dr. Alex Roher, MD, also a board-certified anesthesiologist. Brooke Stearns, PA-C, is our Lead Medical Provider. Meet the team on our providers page.
  • Labs in the building. Three panels—Hormone, Core, and Advanced—are drawn on-site and reviewed by the clinician treating you.
  • A full recovery floor. Combine PEMF with red light therapy, infrared sauna, and cold plunge or hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
  • Screening before selling. You will hear whether a service suits you before anyone books it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a PEMF session feel like?
Most people feel a light tapping or nothing at all. You lie fully clothed on a mat, or an applicator is placed over one area. Many patients use the time to rest or nap.
How long is a session and how often should I come?
Session length and frequency depend on what you are working on. Our clinical team will suggest a schedule at your first visit and adjust it based on how you respond, rather than selling you a fixed package up front.
Is PEMF therapy safe?
It is generally well tolerated. The main concern is interference with implanted electronic devices such as pacemakers, so screening comes first. Your clinician will review your history before your first session.
Will PEMF fix my back pain or my injury?
We do not make that claim. Specific pain and bone healing indications are handled with prescription PEMF devices under medical direction. What we offer is a recovery and comfort service. If you have an injury that needs diagnosis, see a clinician about the injury itself.
Can I combine PEMF with my other treatments?
Yes. Tell your clinician what else you are doing so the plan holds together. Many patients pair recovery services with hormone or weight management care.
