Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in La Jolla, San Diego

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is one of the most oversold services in the wellness market, and one of the most genuinely interesting. Both things are true. What matters is whether the clinic offering it will tell you where the line sits.

SDBody, formerly Hormones and Wellness, offers hyperbaric oxygen therapy at our La Jolla clinic, 7710 Fay Ave, a free-standing practice in La Jolla village minutes from the coast. This is our only location with a chamber. Our Mission Hills clinic does not offer HBOT.

How Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Works

You sit or lie in a sealed chamber while the air pressure inside is raised above normal atmospheric pressure and you breathe a high concentration of oxygen. The raised pressure lets the blood carry more dissolved oxygen than it can at sea level. That is the whole mechanism, and everything else follows from it.

Sessions are quiet and passive. Most people read, listen to something, or nap. The main sensation is pressure in the ears during the ascent and descent, similar to a plane taking off, which clears with swallowing or yawning.

What HBOT Is Cleared For, And What It Is Not

This is the section most clinics skip, so read it carefully.

The FDA has cleared hyperbaric oxygen therapy devices for a defined list of medical indications. That list is maintained by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society and covers conditions such as decompression sickness, carbon monoxide poisoning, gas embolism, certain problem wounds, radiation injury, severe anemia, crush injury and specific serious infections.

The FDA has publicly stated that claims about hyperbaric oxygen curing conditions such as cancer, Lyme disease and autism are unproven. In an August 25, 2025, letter to health care providers, the FDA also reminded facilities about fire risk and the importance of following manufacturer instructions for use.

So here is our position. SDBody offers hyperbaric oxygen therapy as a wellness and recovery service. We do not offer it as a treatment for the conditions on the cleared indication list, and we do not claim it treats conditions outside that list. If you have a wound, a radiation injury or another cleared indication, you belong in a hospital-based, accredited hyperbaric program, and we will say so and point you there.

What patients typically come to us for is recovery support. Many use it after surgery, after hard training or during a stretch of poor sleep and heavy stress. Research on hyperbaric oxygen for general recovery, cognition, and aging is active and preliminary. It is not settled, and we will not present it as though it were.

Screening and Safety

Hyperbaric therapy is not right for everyone, and screening is not a formality.

  • Untreated pneumothorax is a contraindication
  • Certain lung conditions, recent ear surgery, difficulty equalizing ear pressure, uncontrolled seizures, claustrophobia, pregnancy and some chemotherapy agents all require review
  • Oxygen at high concentration raises fire risk, so no lighters, electronics, oils, lotions, or synthetic fabrics go in the chamber
  • Ear barotrauma is the most common side effect, and oxygen toxicity and temporary vision changes are recognized risks

Our clinical team reviews your history, medications and prior surgeries before your first session, and our staff supervise you throughout. That supervision is the difference between a clinic and a rental chamber.

What Your First Session In La Jolla Looks Like

You come in, a member of our clinical team goes through your health history and confirms there is nothing that rules you out, and you change into chamber-safe clothing. Staff explain the pressure change before it starts so nothing catches you off guard, then you settle in and the chamber pressurizes gradually. You stay in contact with our team the whole time. Afterwards, most people go straight back to their day, and some feel tired for an hour or two.

Why Patients Choose SDBody La Jolla

  • Physician-led. Co-founders Dr. Shawn Vedamani, MD, Medical Director and a board-certified anesthesiologist with more than 15 years of clinical experience, and Dr. Alex Roher, MD, also a board-certified anesthesiologist. Brooke Stearns, PA-C, is our Lead Medical Provider. Meet them on our providers page.
  • Diagnostics under the same roof. If you are chasing fatigue or slow recovery, we can run diagnostic labs instead of guessing.
  • A complete recovery plan. HBOT pairs naturally with PEMF therapy, red light therapy and infrared sauna and cold plunge, and our recovery after surgery support.
  • Honest framing. You get the evidence as it stands, including the parts that are still open questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is a hyperbaric session?
Sessions commonly run around 60 to 90 minutes plus time for pressurizing and depressurizing. Our staff will confirm the exact length of your protocol when you book, since it depends on the plan your clinician sets.
Will hyperbaric oxygen therapy treat my medical condition?
Only a defined list of conditions has FDA-cleared indications for HBOT, and those are generally treated in accredited hospital-based programs. SDBody offers HBOT as a wellness and recovery service. If your situation calls for treatment on the cleared list, we will tell you and refer you.
Does it hurt?
No. The most common sensation is ear pressure during pressure changes, which usually clears the same way it does on a flight. Tell staff if it does not clear, because the rate can be slowed.
What should I wear?
Cotton clothing. Leave out lotions, oils, hair products, lighters, and electronics. Our team will walk you through what is allowed before you go in, following the manufacturer instructions for the chamber.
Can I combine HBOT with hormone therapy or weight loss care?
Yes, and many patients do. Tell your clinician what you are already doing so the plan fits together. See our hormones and medical weight loss pages.
