Red Light Therapy in Mission Hills, San Diego

Two questions come up constantly about red light therapy, and almost nobody selling it in San Diego answers either one honestly. Should I just buy a panel for my house? And does this actually do anything, or does it only feel like it does?

SDBody, formerly Hormones and Wellness, offers red light therapy at our Mission Hills clinic, 1747 Hancock St Ste C, minutes from Downtown San Diego and the airport. We open at 8am. Here are both answers.

The Home Panel Question

Consumer devices vary enormously. Output power, wavelength accuracy, the distance you are meant to sit, and how long a session should run all differ from unit to unit, and many home panels are considerably weaker than the equipment used in clinics and in published studies. That is why two people who own the same brand can report completely different experiences.

There is also the boring factor that decides most of it. Consistency. A panel in a spare room gets used enthusiastically for three weeks and then becomes furniture. A booked appointment tends to happen.

If you already own a device, bring the make and model with you. Our team will tell you straight whether a clinic session adds anything for what you are trying to achieve or whether you already have what you need at home.

Does It Do Anything?

Red light therapy, also known as photobiomodulation, applies specific wavelengths of red and near infrared light to skin and the tissue underneath. There is no ultraviolet involved at all, which is what separates it entirely from a tanning bed. It does not tan you, and it does not burn you.

On the evidence, the picture splits three ways.

  • Established. The FDA has cleared a range of light-based devices for particular uses, and the best supported are dermatological, alongside some cleared pain and wound applications. Clearance is device-specific and indication-specific, so both matter when someone quotes it to you.
  • Genuinely mixed. Muscle recovery, post-exercise soreness, joint stiffness, and skin appearance. Real research exists, and so does wide variation in wavelength, dose, and protocol between studies, which makes head-to-head comparison difficult.
  • Thin. Sleep, mood, systemic energy, and fat loss. Most of the sweeping wellness claims sit here.

SDBody offers red light therapy as a wellness and recovery service and does not present it as a treatment for a diagnosed medical condition. Patients tell us they like how they feel and look after a consistent run of sessions. That is worth having. It is not a medical outcome, and we will not describe it as one.

The Safety Issue Nobody Mentions

Red light is well tolerated by almost everyone. The precaution most often skipped is the medication one.

Several very common drugs increase sensitivity to light, including certain antibiotics, acne medications, and diuretics. If you are on any of them, say so before your first session. Also tell us about photosensitivity conditions such as lupus or porphyria, pregnancy, an active skin cancer, an undiagnosed lesion in the area being treated, or any recent skin procedure. Eye protection is not optional, and our staff will provide it.

Our clinical team goes through your history and medication list at intake, which is a conversation a home panel and an unstaffed studio cannot have with you.

What A Session Involves

Short, passive, and undemanding. You wear the eye protection, sit or lie in front of the panel or in the bed, and feel mild warmth at most. Nothing is required of you afterwards, which is why it works well as an early appointment before a downtown workday.

Who Books It Here

  • Downtown professionals slotting a short session in before work
  • Athletes and active adults managing training soreness
  • Patients focused on skin appearance who would rather have clinicians on site
  • Patients in hormone care or medical weight loss building out a wider routine
  • People who tried a home device and want to know whether they are using it properly

Why SDBody Mission Hills?

  • Clinicians in the building. Co-founders Dr. Shawn Vedamani, MD, Medical Director, and a board-certified anesthesiologist with more than 15 years of clinical experience, and Dr. Alex Roher, MD, also a board-certified anesthesiologist. Brooke Stearns, PA-C, is our Lead Medical Provider. See our providers page.
  • Testing when light is not the answer. Chasing low energy is a bloodwork question before it is a light question. See diagnostic labs.
  • Sensible stacking. Combine cryotherapy or infrared sauna and cold plunge in one visit.
  • Straight answers, including when the answer is that you do not need us.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a clinic session better than my home panel?
It depends entirely on your device and how you use it. Bring the make and model, and our team will give you an honest read rather than a sales answer.
Could my medication be a problem?
Possibly. Some antibiotics, acne treatments, and diuretics increase light sensitivity. Bring your full medication list to intake.
How many sessions before anything changes?
Reported effects generally come from consistent use across weeks, not from one visit. Our team will suggest a starting frequency and adjust it as you go.
Is this a tanning bed?
No. Tanning beds emit ultraviolet light, which damages skin. This uses red and near infrared wavelengths with no ultraviolet at all.
Can it help my skin?
Some of the strongest evidence for light-based devices is dermatological, with specific cleared devices for specific indications. Whether that applies to your concern is a clinician question, and we would rather answer it properly than promise you a result.
