Infrared Sauna and Cold Plunge in Mission Hills, San Diego

San Diego is full of places to sweat and then get cold. Nearly all of them are studios that sell you a membership, hand you a waiver, and never ask a single question about your blood pressure, your heart, or the medications you take.

SDBody is a clinic. Our infrared sauna and cold plunge sit inside a physician-led practice at 1747 Hancock St Ste C in Mission Hills, minutes from Downtown San Diego and the airport, with providers and diagnostic labs in the same building. We open at 8am, which makes a proper recovery session before work realistic.

What Contrast Therapy Involves

Infrared sauna warms the body directly with infrared light rather than heating the surrounding air, so the room runs cooler than a traditional Finnish sauna while still producing a serious sweat. A cold plunge is a short immersion in cold water. Alternating between the two is contrast therapy.

The session itself is simple. Heat, then cold, usually repeated a few times with rest between rounds. Most people leave alert, loose, and noticeably calmer than when they walked in.

The Evidence, Without the Inflation

Sauna. This has been studied more seriously than most recovery practices. Large observational cohorts have linked frequent sauna bathing with cardiovascular and mortality outcomes. Observational research shows association rather than proof of cause, and most of that work looked at traditional saunas rather than infrared. Encouraging, but not a guarantee.

Cold water immersion. The clearest and most consistent finding is reduced perceived muscle soreness after exercise. There is also reasonable evidence that cold immersion straight after resistance training can blunt some of the adaptation you were training for, which is a timing problem worth knowing about.

Contrast therapy specifically. Popular, pleasant, and genuinely understudied. Most people report a better mood, easier sleep, and less stiffness. Those are reasonable things to want, and we will say so without dressing them up as medical outcomes.

Screening, Because Heat and Cold Are Not Neutral

Both put a real load on the cardiovascular system. That is much of the point and also the risk.

Talk to us before your first session if you have heart disease, uncontrolled blood pressure, arrhythmia, a history of fainting, a seizure disorder, Raynaud’s, cold urticaria, are pregnant, or take medications affecting heart rate, blood pressure, or fluid balance. Skip alcohol beforehand. Never plunge alone, and never push past shivering you cannot control.

Our clinical team reviews your history at intake and will tell you before you book if contrast therapy is not appropriate for you.

How To Get The Most From It

Consistency matters more than intensity. Two or three sessions a week that you actually keep will do more than one punishing session you never repeat. Arrive hydrated, rest a few minutes between rounds rather than sprinting from hot to cold, and breathe slowly through the first thirty seconds of the plunge, which is the part nearly everyone finds hardest. There is no single correct order for general recovery, so finish on whichever end leaves you feeling best.

Who Uses It at Our Mission Hills Clinic

  • Downtown professionals booking an early session before the workday
  • Athletes and gym regulars managing soreness and training load
  • Patients working on sleep and stress, alongside our poor sleep and recovery pathway
  • Patients in hormone care or medical weight loss who want recovery handled in the same place
  • People who want medical staff nearby rather than a keypad and an empty studio

What Your First Visit Involves

Bring swimwear and a towel and give yourself a few extra minutes on the first visit, since our clinical team will go through your health history before you start. They set a conservative starting protocol, explain how the rounds are structured, and stay reachable throughout. Nothing about the first session is a test of toughness. Most people find the second visit considerably easier than the first, mainly because they know what the cold feels like and stop bracing against it.

Why SDBody Rather Than A Recovery Studio

  • Clinicians on site. Co-founders Dr. Shawn Vedamani, MD, Medical Director, and a board-certified anesthesiologist, and Dr. Alex Roher, MD, also a board-certified anesthesiologist, with Brooke Stearns, PA-C, as Lead Medical Provider. See our providers page.
  • Labs when the fatigue is not just training. Three panels: Hormone, Core, and Advanced. See diagnostic labs.
  • More recovery options here. Cryotherapy and red light therapy.
  • Screening as standard, rather than a waiver nobody reads.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should I spend in each?
It depends on your experience, your health history, and what you are training for. Our staff set a starting protocol at your first visit and built from there. Nobody should be gutting out a session that feels wrong.
Should I plunge straight after lifting?
Probably not, if muscle growth is the goal. Evidence suggests cold immersion immediately after resistance training can reduce some of the adaptation. Leave a gap or plunge on rest days. Your clinician can help you time it around your program.
Can I come before work?
Yes. Mission Hills opens at 8 am Monday through Friday, which is the main reason downtown patients pick this location for recovery sessions.
What should I bring?
Swimwear and a towel. Come hydrated and skip the alcohol beforehand. Our front desk will confirm anything else when you book.
Is infrared better than a traditional sauna?
It runs cooler, and many people tolerate it for longer, which matters if comfort is what keeps you consistent. Most of the strongest long-term research used traditional saunas, so we will not claim infrared is superior.
