Cryotherapy in Mission Hills, San Diego

Two or three minutes of extreme cold, then back to your day feeling sharp and loose. That is the appeal, and it is a real one. Cryotherapy is fast; it takes no preparation, and unlike most recovery services, it does not eat your afternoon.

SDBody, formerly Hormones and Wellness, offers cryotherapy at our Mission Hills clinic, 1747 Hancock St Ste C, minutes from Downtown San Diego and the airport. We open at 8am, so it fits before work rather than instead of it.

What Whole Body Cryotherapy Is

You step into a chamber where the air is cooled to a very low temperature for a short exposure, usually a couple of minutes. Your head stays above the chamber, you wear protective gloves, socks and footwear, and staff stay with you the entire time. It is cold and dry rather than wet, which most people find far more tolerable than an ice bath.

Afterwards the common report is a rush of alertness, warmth returning quickly, and looser, less achy muscles.

Being Straight About The Evidence

Cryotherapy is heavily marketed and the claims run well ahead of the research, so here is the accurate position.

Published reviews of whole body cryotherapy in athletes report short term effects on muscle soreness and markers of inflammation, while consistently noting that study quality is limited, protocols vary widely and long term benefit is not established. Whole body cryotherapy is not a treatment for any medical condition, and we do not offer it as one.

What it reliably does is feel good, help people move more comfortably after hard training, and take three minutes. Those are legitimate reasons to book it. Weight loss, disease treatment, and cure claims are not, and you should be suspicious of any San Diego clinic making them.

If your soreness and fatigue are not really about training, the useful next step is testing rather than more cold. See our diagnostic labs.

Safety and Who Should Not Do It

Extreme cold puts genuine load on the cardiovascular system, and there are people who should not step into the chamber.

Talk to us first if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure, heart disease, arrhythmia, a history of stroke, Raynaud’s, cold urticaria or cold intolerance, peripheral neuropathy, a seizure disorder, open wounds in the exposure area, or if you are pregnant. Skin must be completely dry before entry, and jewelry and metal come off. Frostbite and cold burns are the recognized risks, and they are almost always the result of moisture on the skin, poor protective gear, or an unsupervised session.

Our clinical team reviews your history at intake, and staff supervise every session. That supervision is the whole argument for doing this in a clinic.

Getting The Most From It

Cryotherapy rewards consistency rather than heroics. A short exposure you repeat two or three times a week does more for you than one long session you never want to repeat. Come dry, take the jewelry off before you arrive so you are not fumbling with it at the chamber, and keep moving gently once you step out, since light movement helps you rewarm faster and feels better than standing still. If you are combining cryo with sauna or red light on the same visit, tell the front desk when you book so the order and the timing make sense.

Who Uses Cryotherapy at Our Mission Hills Clinic?

  • Downtown professionals who want a genuinely fast recovery session before work
  • Athletes and gym regulars managing soreness through a training block
  • Patients working through general stiffness and slow recovery
  • Patients already in hormone care or medical weight loss who want the recovery side handled in the same place
  • People who want the effect of a cold plunge without getting wet

Why SDBody Rather Than A Cryo Studio

  • Clinicians in the building. Co-founders Dr. Shawn Vedamani, MD, Medical Director, and a board-certified anesthesiologist with more than 15 years of clinical experience, and Dr. Alex Roher, MD, also a board-certified anesthesiologist. Brooke Stearns, PA-C, is our Lead Medical Provider. See our providers page.
  • Screening as standard. A cardiovascular history is a reason for a conversation, not a box on a waiver.
  • Diagnostics on site. Three panels, Hormone, Core and Advanced.
  • A full recovery routine. Combine with infrared sauna and cold plunge or red light therapy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How cold is it and how long do I stay in?
Whole-body cryotherapy uses a very low air temperature for a short exposure, typically a few minutes. Our staff set your exposure based on your experience and tolerance, and they will confirm the exact temperature and duration used at our clinic when you book.
Does it hurt?
It is intensely cold, and most people describe the last thirty seconds as the hard part. It is dry and cold, so it is generally more tolerable than immersion. Staff are with you, and the session ends the moment you say so.
What do I wear?
Minimal dry clothing plus the protective gloves, socks, and footwear we provide. Skin must be completely dry, so no session straight out of a shower or a swim.
How often should I go?
It depends on your training load and what you are managing. Our team will suggest a starting frequency rather than pushing a package on your first visit.
Is cryotherapy safe if I have high blood pressure?
That needs a conversation before you book. Uncontrolled high blood pressure and several cardiovascular conditions are reasons to avoid whole-body cryotherapy. Our clinical team will review your history and tell you honestly.
"I honestly feel like a brand new person."
