Physician-led care in Mission Hills and La Jolla

Labs read in clinical context

Medical Weight Loss in La Jolla, San Diego

You have already done the hard part more than once. You have counted, tracked, trained, and stayed disciplined, and the scale either would not move or moved and came straight back. That pattern is common, and it usually says more about physiology than willpower.

SDBody, formerly Hormones and Wellness, runs a medical weight loss program out of our La Jolla clinic at 7710 Fay Ave, a free-standing practice in the heart of La Jolla Village. It is physician-led; it starts with bloodwork and includes an actual clinician who follows you over time.

What Makes It Medical

The difference between a weight loss program and medical weight loss is not the food plan. It is the diagnostics, the prescribing authority, and the follow-up.

  • Labs first. We draw a panel at the La Jolla clinic and look at what may be working against you, including hormone, thyroid, and metabolic markers. Our three panels are Hormone, Core, and Advanced. See diagnostic labs.
  • A clinician reviews the results with you. Not a portal message and not a chatbot. A provider explains what the numbers mean in the context of your history and medications.
  • Prescription options where appropriate. FDA-approved prescription medications for weight management exist, and they are one tool among several. Your clinician will discuss whether one is suitable for you, what it does, what it costs you in side effects, and what monitoring it requires.
  • Ongoing monitoring. Weight management medications are not a one-visit transaction. We review dose, tolerance, and lab markers as you go.

Why the Scale Fights Back

Several factors can make weight loss harder than your effort suggests, and most are invisible without testing. Thyroid function, insulin resistance, sleep quality, chronic stress load, medications you already take, and shifting hormone levels all play a part. For men, low testosterone can sit underneath stubborn midsection fat. For women, perimenopausal and menopausal changes can shift where weight settles and how easily it comes off.

None of that is a reason to give up on effort. It is a reason to find out what you are working against before you spend another year guessing. Our pages on men, women, and why hormone levels change with age go deeper.

Your First Visit in La Jolla

We follow the same four-step pathway for every patient.

  1. Intake. You tell us your goals, your history, and what you have already tried, with time to talk it through properly.
  2. Lab draw. Our medical staff walks you through the panel options in the clinic so you can choose with a clear head.
  3. Consultation. A clinician reviews your results against your symptoms, history, and current medications.
  4. Next steps. If care is appropriate, the clinician explains the plan, the alternatives, the risks, and the monitoring before anything starts.

The full pathway is on our how it works page.

Honest Expectations

Results vary, and any clinic that quotes you a guaranteed number of pounds is selling rather than treating. What we can commit to is a plan grounded in your labs, a clinician who follows you, and a clear explanation of the trade-offs before you start.

Prescription weight management medications carry side effects, and not everyone tolerates them. Some people should not take them at all. Your clinician will go through the specifics that apply to you, including nausea and gastrointestinal effects, and what to do if they show up.

The other honest point is that the plan has to survive after the initial phase. Protein intake, resistance training, and sleep all matter for holding onto muscle while you lose fat, and they matter more, not less, if you are using medication. We build that into the conversation from the first visit rather than raising it at the end.

Why Patients Choose SDBody La Jolla

  • Physician-led. Co-founders: Dr. Shawn Vedamani, MD, Medical Director and a board-certified anesthesiologist with more than 15 years of clinical experience, and Dr. Alex Roher, MD, also a board-certified anesthesiologist. Brooke Stearns, PA-C, our Lead Medical Provider, works specifically in hormone optimization, weight management, and longevity medicine. See our providers page.
  • Hormones and weight handled together. Many programs treat them as separate businesses. We look at both, because for a lot of patients they are the same problem.
  • Recovery services on site. Infrared sauna and cold plunge, red light therapy and hyperbaric oxygen therapy are all in the same building.
  • Clear costs before you commit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to take medication to join the program?
No. Medication is one option, and it is not right for everyone. Some patients start with labs, hormone care, and a structured plan. Your clinician will lay out the choices.
Do I need labs before starting?
Yes. Testing is what separates a medical program from a general weight loss plan, and it often changes the recommendation. Start with our lab assessment.
How quickly will I see results?
It depends on your starting point, your labs, which approach you and your clinician choose and how your body responds. We will give you a realistic picture at the consultation rather than a number designed to close a sale.
Can men do this alongside testosterone therapy?
Yes, and it is a common combination. Body composition and hormone levels are connected, so your clinician will build one plan that covers both.
Is medical weight loss covered by insurance?
SDBody is a direct-pay practice and does not bill insurance. This allows us to provide personalized care without the limitations or requirements of insurance plans. We accept credit cards, debit cards, HSA, and FSA payments for eligible services. Pricing is discussed upfront, so you’ll know the cost of your care before treatment.
